10 Questions With Rob McCullough (by Darrick Patrick)

"Razor" Rob McCullough is a professional mixed martial artist who has appeared in organizations such as World Extreme Cagefighting, King Of The Cage, Hitman Fighting Productions, Pit Fighting Championship, World Fighting Alliance, and Ultimate Pankration.

DarrickWhat was the road that led you to professional mixed martial arts competition?

Rob: I ran away at age fourteen.  I was angry because I wanted to live a normal life like all of my other friends did and have a place to call home - without fighting parents.  It lead me to working out and eventually kickboxing at a local gym, where I had my first fight and fell in love with combat sports.

Darrick: Do you have any words of advice for younger individuals looking to train in MMA?

Rob: It’s not "practice makes perfect", but "perfect practice makes perfect".  Never give up, listen to anyone who has something to say, and train hard.  It doesn’t matter if you fall down, but just how many times you get back up.

Darrick: Who are a few of the people in the sport that you highly respect?

Rob: Well, Tito Ortiz for being a friend to me when I was in high school and seeing his personal trials and tribulations - and how he overcame them to be one of the best in the sport today.  As well as him being business savvy enough to start his own company and do very well with it all on his own.

My other would be my good friend Tiki - for all the failed attempts he’s had at success in the game, he sticks it through and keeps his eye on the prize no matter what.  I suppose others would include Frank Shamrock for being so well-rounded when the game was first evolving and Randy Couture for being such a natural athlete and overall nice guy, in and out of the cage.

DarrickWhat’s the scoop on Razor Clothing and where can your fans acquire this merchandise?

Rob: I started my own clothing line, which now includes eight pieces - in "clothing lingo" that means I have eight different things to sell.  (Laughs)  Anything from t-shirts with different logos to hoodies, and even girls tank tops.  I was selling them from my gym and doing well with it, then my boy Steve said, "Hey, I’ll help you.  Let’s make a web store and see where it goes."  Currently it’s doing great online at www.razorclothing.tv and in a bunch of MMA stores around the country.

DarrickIn your experience so far, what brings you the most fulfillment out of martial arts?

Rob: The fact that when I’m training for that period of time, the only thing on my mind is that particular goal and the thrill of competition.  It’s human chess - best said.

DarrickWho are some of the people that greatly influenced you while growing up?

Rob: My mom, for sure.  She is still the hardest worker I’ve ever met.  She told me I might only be 4 foot 11, but when I am mad I’m 6 foot 8.  It’s not the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the dog - you know what I mean.

My brother-in-law Bill and my sister Gina took me in when my parents were getting seperated and showed me there’s more to life when you work hard.  They really emphasized school and although I didn’t graduate high school, I took it as people don’t like idiots.  So, reading and learning as much as I could was a priority.

Darrick: Outside of mixed martial arts, what are your other interests?

Rob: Strip clubs and the company of attractive females.  I also surf, snowboard, shoot and collect guns, and race offroad trucks - that’s my new thing.  I also like fishing and hunting.  Riding bikes is pretty fun too.  No, not bicycles - dirt bikes.

Darrick: If you had 24 hours left to live, how would you spend that time?

Rob: I would get really drunk and go to a massage parlor.

Darrick: What is your oldest memory?

Rob: Christmas with my family by the tree, looking at all of the presents with my sisters and brother.

Darrick: Tell us something about you that most people don’t know.

Rob: If I didn’t fight for a living, I might have tried to be a comedian...not really, but I’m never serious.  I have six sisters and I left home when I was fourteen years old.
