10 Questions With Justin McCully (by Darrick Patrick)
Justin "The Insane One" McCully is a professional mixed martial artist who has competed in organizations such as the Ultimate Fighting Championship, Extreme Wars, Jungle Fight, It's Showtime, Universal Fighting-Arts Organization, Rings, Valor Fighting Championships, World Vale Tudo Championship, Pancrase, and Daidojuku. At the time of this interview, his next scheduled match is against Frank Mir at UFC 86 on July 5th, 2008.
Darrick: What road led you to competing professionally in mixed martial arts?
Justin: I followed my brother Sean McCully into the sport after he had his debut in the World Combat Championship in 1995. I started training with Alan Goes, and after a good amateur showing I went pro in 1997.
Darrick: In your experience so far, what brings you the most fulfillment out of MMA?
Justin: Victory.
Darrick: Who are a few of the people in the sport that you highly respect?
Justin: Tito Ortiz (incredible work ethic), Jason Parillo (great trainer/motivator), and Sean McCully (ballsy).
Darrick: What does a typical training session for you consist of?
Justin: Can't give away the secrets, but it's an all day affair. Been mixing in a lot of cross training - you gotta' change it up and trick your body into getting into shape. Use creative ways to build more natural strength and endurance.
Darrick: Any words of advice for younger individuals looking to compete in martial arts?
Justin: Don't take too many head shots. Save it for when you need to, which is not every day in the gym - unless you don't want to speak right when you get old. Learn the right way, don't build bad habits or take shortcuts.
Darrick: Who are some of the people that greatly influenced you while growing up?
Justin: All my boys - we went big.
Darrick: Outside of MMA, what are your other interests?
Justin: My kid (soon to be kids) and a lot of recreational stuff. Surfing, biking, snowboarding, and anything else that's fun to do.
Darrick: What moments in your life have you been proudest of so far?
Justin: The birth of my first daughter Alexandria, winning back to back national titles in BJJ, winning a bare knuckles match, winning my debut in the UFC, touring with New Japan Pro Wrestling (tagged with Joanie Lauer AKA Chyna and took on the NWO), and being a member of SAG.
Darrick: Tell us something about you that most people don't know.
Justin: I do stunts for Norman Howell on CSI: NY between fights.
Darrick: What is your oldest memory?
Justin: I can't remember.
