10 Questions With James Fanshier (by Darrick Patrick)

James "The Educator" Fanshier is a professional mixed martial artist who has competed in organizations such as King Of The Cage and Gladiator Challenge.  At the time of this interview, his next scheduled match is against Mike Guymon at King Of The Cage - Bio Hazard on August 14th, 2008.

DarrickWhat was the path that led you to being a professional mixed martial artist?

James: I wrestled in high school and community college, and kickboxed as an amateur for Cung Le out of college.  Then, I moved outside Sacramento, met Cal Worsham, and started training MMA for fun fitness.  After a few months, I had my first fight.

Darrick: Who are some of the individuals that have influenced you on a major level?

James: Jim Root at West Valley College provided a structure for me to become the best that I could be.  My high school wrestling coach Ben Barrientos helped me develop confidence and a winning attitude.  Cung Le developed my toughness and kickboxing technique.  Cal Worsham developed my thug mentality in the cage.  Cassio Werneck has been working with my Jiu-Jitsu off and on for the past several years.  I went to a week long clinic with Randy Couture - his teachings are unbelievable.  Last would be Bas Rutten, although I have never met him, I have stolen a few things from his DVD.  Oh, and don't forget the B.J. Penn book has some awesome fundamentals reassuring much of what I already do.

Darrick: What brings you the most fulfillment out of MMA?

James: I love being the super hero.  A larger-than-life warrior.  I get a real high from that.  If I can bring all of my tools to the table, I feel that I am unstoppable.

DarrickGenerally speaking, what does a typical training session for you consist of?

James: I'll train six days a week and each day is a little different.  It also depends on where I train.  I try to get Thai pads in several times a week, rolling Jiu-Jitsu and submission wrestling for five days, hard sparring two days a week, and live wrestling two to four days a week.

DarrickOutside of mixed martial arts, what are your other interests?

James: Currently I am working with an internet marketing team and launching my site GetLifeStuff.com - I also like to play cards.  Doing stuff with my boy gets better and better as he gets older too.

DarrickWho are a couple of people that you'd like to meet in a match that you haven't yet had a chance to compete against?

James: Aaron Wetherspoon, just because of all the hype and we were scheduled to face each other a few times now.  Anthony Lapsley - he beat my teammate when he had a bad night.  I am scheduled to fight the winner of their match that is on the August 14th card.

Darrick: What would you say to younger individuals looking to make a career in MMA?

James: Don't plan on making it a career - it can be a glorified hobby.  Have a back-up plan.

Darrick: If you had 24 hours left to live, how would you spend that time?

James: I'd spend it with my kids.

Darrick: What is your oldest memory?

James: Riding my Big Wheel with my brother on the back.

Darrick: Tell us something about you that most people don't know.

James: I have horrendous learning disabilities.  I have had to compensate all of my life.
