10 Questions With Ben Nguyen (by Darrick Patrick)
Ben Nguyen is a professional mixed martial artist who has competed in the Fury Fights organization at events such as Battle in Brookings 2 and Fury Fights Fight Night. At the time of this interview, his next scheduled match is against Alexis Vila at PFC 12: High Stakes on January 22nd, 2009.
Darrick: How did you end up competing in professional mixed martial arts?
Ben: Well, after getting beat up by some neighborhood punks at the age of twelve, I decided to take up TKD. Being a competitive martial artist, I entered a local MMA circuit at age eighteen and then eventually ended up at a MMA gym. So, here I am now.
Darrick: Where could you possibly see the future of the sport ten years from now?
Ben: I could see MMA getting as big as Nascar - as the next fastest growing sport in America.
Darrick: Your next scheduled fight is against Alexis Vila on February 6th. What are your thoughts about this upcoming match?
Ben: I'm feeling really good about this fight. Even though Alexis Vila is a former Olympic wrestler, MMA isn't just wrestling and I feel like I am more of a complete fighter than Alexis. Plus being in the Midwest where wrestling is very popular, I get a chance to train with many former wrestlers.
Darrick: Who are a few of the people in the sport that you highly respect?
Ben: Of course all of my trainers and partners at the gym. We're all like one big family, always there for each other. I was a big fan on Genki Sudo back when he fought just because he had an entertaining fighting style and he was very respectful towards other fighters.
Darrick: What brings you the most fulfillment out of martial arts?
Ben: Seeing all of the hard work pay off.
Darrick: Do you have any words of advice for other individuals looking to compete in MMA?
Ben: Stay determined and good things will happen.
Darrick: Outside of mixed martial arts, what are your other interests?
Ben: I am a huge gamer/geek, enjoy fixing/building PCs, I love building cars and racing them, I like snowboarding, and I like to watch anime and read manga.
Darrick: If you were stuck in the middle of an ocean with only three items, what would they be?
Ben: A computer with the internet because my life is centered around them and I couldn't go a day without being on a computer. Also, an iPod because I gotta' keep up with my podcasts and a gun since I can't think of anything else. Plus I think it'd be cool to have a gun to shoot things with and help pass time.
Darrick: What is your oldest memory?
Ben: I believe it was visiting Mount Rushmore for the first time as a kid.
Darrick: Tell us something about you that most people don't know.
Ben: Well, like I said in the other question - I'm just a HUGE geek, but I'm proud to be one. Although you wouldn't be able to tell unless you really knew me.
