Pro MMA Fighters discuss Comic Book Characters (by Darrick Patrick) When most people think of individuals who are familiar with comic book characters, they usually don't envision trained fighters who could probably dismantle the average person in battle within seconds. However, for fans of mixed martial arts and comics both, you can see a correlation between the reality of true fighting and the fantasy of a costumed fighter. If our reality mimicked that of a comic book universe, without superpowers, it'd be a safe bet that some of the heroes and villains with decent careers would come from the world of professional mixed martial arts. Of course, lots of military, law enforcement, and others highly trained in combat could prosper as these types of individuals too. Basically anyone with the skills and knowledge to overpower the majority of people would have a chance to succeed as a real-life version of the archetypal comic book character. I talked to thirty professional mixed martial artists who have appeared in various organizations such as the Ultimate Fighting Championship, Strikeforce, Bellator, King of the Cage, Maximum Fighting Championship, Cage Warriors, and many more. This is their take on fantasy characters that they can possibly find themselves identifying with. What comic book character do you relate to most? Art Santore: I am most like Venom, who fights for good, but has a touch of that menace still in him. Dave Yost: Definitely Wolverine. He's the coolest under pressure and has very little regard for authority. I can relate. Elvis Sinosic: Groo the Wanderer. Groo is just trying to be himself and live his life with his loved ones. Though in the process, he gets into a lot of mischief. A funny, light-hearted comic. If you haven't read it, you should check it out. Jesse Bowen: I think I relate most to my favorite ninja turtle, Michelangelo. He always runs his mouth and talks a lot, but when it's time to back it up he can. If you ask anyone who knows me, I'm very similar. Dhiego Lima: The Hulk. (Laughs) It's like I save all my anger until fight day. When the day comes, I turn into a whole different animal and want to hurt somebody. Louis Taylor: Peter Parker because Mary Jane is always getting him into trouble. Jared Downing: One has to admire how Doomsday rolls. If we were genetically engineered to be murdered repeatedly, in an attempt to become immune to death and destruction just so that we could kill Superman, then we would phone it in for the rest of our days too. Howard Longus: Probably Wolverine or the Punisher because certain events in my past helped shape the way I approach things now. Chris Manuel: I would say Nightcrawler from the X-Men. I probably look like him to tell you the truth. (Laughs) Teleporting would be a cool power to have. I sometimes like to teleport from one position to another whenever I fight. Ronda Rousey: Vegeta from Dragonball Z. He's got a lot of pride, and is not the most popular guy. When it comes down to it though, he does whatever he can to get it done. Dave Kaplan: I like Thor because he has an awesome hammer. Nathan Murdock: I don't know a whole lot about comics but if there was a hero that just loved having a good time and didn't like taking small matters too seriously, that would be me. I love to work hard, don't get me wrong, but most superheros are just too serious. It's probably an extremely stressful job though, so I understand. Jason Drake: Probably the Punisher because he's a normal guy that's been through some serious shit and came out on top. Also, he is doing something to better mankind. Dave Jansen: Wow, this is a toughie. I guess Fone Bone from Jeff Smith's epic Bone series. He doesn't have any superpowers and neither do I. He's on an epic quest and so am I. Every now and then, I have a run-in with a Rat Thing that I need to put in it's place. Part of me wants to say Wolverine for this question, but my cuts take weeks to heal. Ben Henderson: Captain America. Sheldon Westcott: Garfield, for sure. I just like to sit and eat. I can be happy on a couch with some pasta and a TV. Eric Prindle: I don't really have the opportunity to read many comic books, but I think I'd probably go with Batman. TJ Waldburger: Ummm...Superman. Mainly because I like to disguise myself and wear tights. (Laughs) Evan DeLong: I like Wolverine's story. He is able to rise above his situation. He is also an aggressive person, which of course I can appreciate. Darrell Montague: I'd say Cyclops from the X-Men because he is a strong, silent leader and he also has trouble with the ladies. (Laughs) Mike Ciesnolevicz: I always liked Juggernaut the best. Honestly though, I'm not a huge comic fan. So, I'm not one hundred percent sure who I relate to the most. Chad George: I'd have to say Homer Simpson. I know he's not exactly a comic book character but c'mon, I think he counts. Homer is my mirror image. He is horrible at most things in life but somehow always manages to end up on top. We both can agree on many topics of the world. He's very true on what he stands for, even if it makes absolutely no sense. If I say a word that's not a real word, I'm pretty sure he would understand it. I mean if I said it, then it must be a word, right? Erik Koch: Well, I don't really relate to any of them, but my favorite is Magneto. He is a beast! Keith Wisniewski: Groo The Wanderer. His series is actually the only comic book I've ever read. William Romero: The Incredible Hulk. The reason being is that if I snap, you're all fucked! (Laughs) Eddie Wineland: I'm not big into comics, but my favorites were always Wolverine and Deadpool. Roxanne Modafferi: Unfortunately, I relate in some ways to the Dragon Ball Z gang. I say "unfortunately" because they're always getting the living crap kicked out of themselves. I relate to Vegeta because he feels like he's always being surpassed by his peers, and no matter what he does, he's frustrated he can't reach the level he wants. I sometimes feel like Krillin because he gets physically beat up a lot. Also, like Gohan who can work hard, see the fruits of his efforts, kick butt, and get recognition and fame. Ted Worthington: The Silver Surfer is like me in a way. He wants to be left alone and is a very powerful person who is not to be messed with. Lucas Gamaza: I don't know that I relate to him, but I always liked Wolverine. He is always super pissed and comes back from an ass-whooping to beat the shit out of the baddest villains. He also smokes, drinks, and is a womanizer. Tristan Yunker: Well, I don't know if there is such a character as "AWESOME-Man", but I'm pretty sure that if there were, his stories would be based on me. 10 Questions With Phillipe Nover (by Darrick Patrick) Phillipe "The Filipino Assassin" Nover is a professional mixed martial artist who has competed in organizations such as the Ultimate Fighting Championship, Ring of Combat, Hoosier Fight Club, and Combat Zone. He also appeared on the eighth season of the television show The Ultimate Fighter: Team Nogueira vs. Team Mir. At the time of this interview, his next scheduled match is against Marcin Held in Bellator Fighting Championships at BFC 59 on November 26th, 2011. Darrick: What was the journey that led you to professional mixed martial arts competition? Phillipe: I've always been competitive. My parents had me enrolled in martial arts classes ever since I was a child. I enjoyed it so much and started to challenge myself in tournaments. Then, one of my training partners had his first MMA bout. I thought, "If he can do that, so can I." From that point forward, I was hooked. Darrick: Do you have any words of advice for other individuals looking to compete in MMA? Phillipe: My main words of advice is to wrestle. Start off with wrestling and then learn the other ranges of a fight. Wrestling is so very important. Darrick: Who are a few of the people in the sport that you highly respect? Phillipe: I respect a lot of people in the sport. My training partners that sacrifice their time and bodies for each other. My coaches, who I pretty much have to trust with my life. I also respect guys who made it to the top through hard work. Just regular guys like myself who inched their way to becoming great through sacrifice and discipline. Just like the champ, Frankie Edgar. Darrick: Your next scheduled fight is against Marcin Held on November 26th. What are your thoughts about this upcoming match? Phillipe: Held is a tough kid. He's young, but he sure is good at what he does. He's good at snapping people's knees and ankles. With an impressive 11-2 record, I'm not taking him lightly. I'm training harder and, even more so, training smarter. This is a great test for me, especially since it will be my first MMA fight televised since I left the UFC. Darrick: What brings you the most fulfillment out of martial arts? Phillipe: I love training and I love fighting. When I train each day and learn new moves while trying new things, my mind is so focused and I'm truly having fun. I forget about everything in life. I enter into a new world when I train. Even more so when I fight. It is the ultimate fulfillment. The rush and the energy measures beyond anything the average person can fathom. Darrick: Who are some of the people that greatly influenced you while growing up? Phillipe: I looked up to my parents while growing up. My mother and father are very hardworking, even to this day. They instilled in me at a young age the value of money, hard work, and how having a good education will pay off. Darrick: Outside of MMA, what are your other interests? Phillipe: I'm also a nurse, as everyone already knows. I enjoy it too though. I work in Cardiac Cath, basically assisting doctors in saving people's lives during a heart attack or helping to prevent a heart attack. I love what I do. I'm also into poker, paintballing, StarCraft, movies, food, and cooking. Darrick: If you were stuck in a bomb shelter for the rest of your life, what three items would you take in with you besides food and water? Phillipe: Number one would be Arianny Celeste. Number two is Olivia Munn. Number three will be...oh, no, wait. You mean items, not people? Hmmm, okay then. The first thing I would take in with me is a computer with really good internet access so I can check my Facebook and tweet all day about how cool my bomb shelter is. I would also bring a treadmill so that I can work out and make sure my cardio is up to par. In case there happened to be a zombie apocalypse to go along with the end of the world, I would need to have good lung power to run away from them. Lastly, I would take a 2012 Star VMAX motorcycle in with me. Gosh, I always wanted one of these. It's so badass! I would turn it on and ride it around my bomb shelter in circles all day long. Darrick: Tell us something about you that most people don't know. Phillipe: I've told you everything! Actually, one thing people might not know about me is that I'm afraid of scary movies. I'm such a wuss when is comes to scary flicks. I sometimes even get nightmares! Tough cage fighter on the outside, but on the inside I'm a sensitive little boy who can't even watch The Sixth Sense alone. (Laughs) Darrick: What is your oldest memory? Phillipe: I can't exactly remember my oldest memory. It's probably playing Legos with my brother in my old house. Anything beyond that is a blur. 10 Questions With Matt Van Buren (by Darrick Patrick) Matt Van Buren is a professional mixed martial artist who has appeared in organizations such as Bellator Fighting Championships, Fight Night in the Cage, Black and Blue Entertainment, and Washington Combat. At the time of this interview, his next scheduled match is against Shawn Levesque in Bellator Fighting Championships at BFC 57 on November 12th, 2011. Darrick: How did you end up competing professionally in mixed martial arts? Matt: I was kind of hanging with the wrong crowd while growing up. We got into a lot of trouble and people were going down the wrong path. I always liked to fight. I ended up talking to one of my buddies about MMA because he used to fight. I was looking for something to keep me out of trouble. I started training, took a few fights, and was hooked. Darrick: Who are some of the people that greatly influenced you while growing up? Matt: I wasn't really influenced by people too much when I was younger. My parents tried to keep me on track. I was mostly influenced by my friends though, which wasn't the best thing. (Laughs) Darrick: Any words of advice for other individuals looking to compete in MMA? Matt: Don't get discouraged. I have thought about quitting a million times. This is a very frustrating sport and very mentally draining. Keep focused. I think it's natural for everyone to think about quitting in frustration. Take a day off and get back in there. Darrick: Your next scheduled match is against Shawn Levesque on November 12th. What are your thoughts about this upcoming fight? Matt: This fight with Shawn is my ticket to a chance of getting into the tournament and making a better life for myself. I work a dead-end day job and train every spare minute I have. It's very tough. I would love to train full-time and to do that I must defeat him. I'm too motivated right now. I'm broke and he is in the way of my next meal. It's a bad fight for him. Darrick: Who are a few of the people in the sport that you highly respect? Matt: I have a lot of respect for Randy Couture and the early pioneers who paved the way. Tito Ortiz and Mauricio "Shogun" Rua really inspire me because they have overcome adversity with very serious injuries. They are still able to push through and continue to be successful. Darrick: What brings you the most fulfillment out of martial arts? Matt: I love the satisfaction of a good workout. I also enjoy competition. I strive to be the best at everything, so I enjoy learning new techniques and pushing myself to new limits. Darrick: Outside of MMA, what are your other interests? Matt: At this point, I don't really have many interests outside of mixed martial arts. I barely have time to do laundry. Going to church on Sunday is about it. Darrick: What is your oldest memory? Matt: I think I was in the second grade. I remember getting into trouble during class and being put in the corner. Darrick: Tell us something about you that most people don't know. Matt: There's really not much to tell. I'm a simple guy. Darrick: If you were the last person alive on Earth, what do you think you'd do to entertain yourself? Matt: I'd probably just work out. The majority of my interview work is known via the MMA circuit. Professional mixed martial artists tend to get the most attention from me as far as the interviews go. I can find an appreciation for art on a lot of different levels though, not just within one form. Another interest of mine that I've had since I was three years old is comic books and graphic novels. I'm a sucker for words and visual art.
Delving outside of the fighter interviews, I will now be contributing to Panel Bound. This will be an area where I can shift the focus towards writers and artists, primarily those working professionally within the comic industry. Graphic novels and comic books are perhaps the last frontier for pure freedom and expression, flying under the radar of mass media regulations. An outlaw artform. Somewhere for thinkers and creators to go to push their own boundaries. Or just plain fun, depending on what you're looking for. There's something for everybody.
The first interviews of mine to show up at www.panelbound.com are the five that I did back in 2007 and 2008. Figured it'd be best to get those out to a fresh audience before cranking out some new ones. The following links down below are to those particular interviews. For the new interviews, check in with me at any of my areas online and of course over at Panel Bound.

Oh, and I have one interview that doesn't quite fit into any of the aforementioned brackets. So far, I've only interviewed one person who would be known more as a musician than anything else in their professional endeavors. Here's the information on that following piece.
-----
Chuck D (Carlton Douglas Ridenhour) is a professional musician, author, producer, and lecturer. He may be most known for his work as the frontman for legendary Hip Hop group Public Enemy. Chuck D has also released a solo project titled Autobiography Of Mistachuck and fronted the band called Fine Arts Militia.

10 Questions With Dustin Jacoby (by Darrick Patrick) Dustin Jacoby is a professional mixed martial artist who has competed in organizations such as Capital City Cage Wars, Annihilation Productions, Xtreme Fighting Organization, and Disorderly Conduct. At the time of this interview, his next scheduled match is against Brad Tavares in the Ultimate Fighting Championship at UFC 137: St-Pierre vs. Condit on October 29th, 2011. Darrick: What was the journey that led you to professional mixed martial arts competition? Dustin: It is kind of funny how my MMA career all started. It actually began long before I ever knew what mixed martial arts was all about. At the age of four, my twin brother and I started Tae Kwon Do. By the age of five years old, we were wrestling too. When we turned twelve, we moved from Colorado to Illinois and the school district we moved to didn't offer either sport. So, I began playing other sports such as basketball, football, and baseball. I later went on to play four years of college football before moving into MMA shortly after, without ever watching a UFC event, or even a cage fight for that matter. The real journey started when my brother called me one Saturday afternoon and said, "What's up bro?! I'm getting in a fight tonight!" The rest is history. Darrick: Who are some of the people that greatly influenced you while growing up? Dustin: I would have to say my entire family. From my grandpa and grandma Jacoby, to my uncle Doug, to my mom and step-dad, and most importantly my twin brother, Darren Jacoby. Darren and I were brought up to be hard-working, respectful kids who learned how to listen and work hard for the things we wanted most in life. With Darren and I being twins, nobody pushed us as hard as we pushed ourselves. I am the older twin, so I've always had that sense of responsibility between the two of us. Darren has also always subconsciously brought out the best in me. Darrick: Do you have any words of advice for other individuals looking to compete in MMA? Dustin: The single most important thing to remember is Rome wasn't built in a day. What I mean by that is these days everybody wants to be a UFC fighter, but they don't want to take the time to put in the needed work it takes to become such a high level fighter. It takes several months, and even years, of hard work every day to mold your skills into what they need to be in order to compete at a high level, or to even compete at all. If you want something bad enough, then you must take the time to put in the hard work it takes to be where you want to be. Work hard and never give up on your dreams. Darrick: Your next scheduled fight is against Brad Tavares on October 29th. What are your thoughts about this upcoming match? Dustin: I believe this is a perfect match-up for me in my UFC debut. Brad Tavares is a very tough dude, and I believe he will bring the best out in me. I know he is a striker first, and that is going to play very well into my game plan and what I bring to the table. With that being said, I realize Brad and I are both mixed martial artists. We are going to be prepared to go wherever the fight takes us. Darrick: What brings you the most fulfillment out of martial arts? Dustin: The single thing I love most about martial arts is the competition between one man and another. Competition breeds success. When you have two men locked in a cage who are willing to do whatever it takes to beat the other, I don't think there is anything else quite like it in the world. It is an opportunity to showcase your skills, as well as to show just how hard you've been working in and outside of the gym. Darrick: Who are a few of the people in the sport that you highly respect? Dustin: As I mentioned in a previous answer, I had never even watched a single fight until about three years ago. I have obviously learned a lot about the sport within the last three years, but I haven't followed it long enough to have certain individuals I look up to or respect. I'd have to say Dana White is the man I respect the most. He really is the guy that made MMA and the UFC what it is today. Without his drive and desire to build the sport like he has, I don't think I would be fighting today. Darrick: Outside of MMA, what are your other interests? Dustin: I've competed my whole life, so I am a huge sports fan. I love anything that has to do with competition. Hanging out with friends, going on vacations, lifting weights, fishing, fantasy football, and spending time with my beautiful girlfriend of almost four years are some things I do on a regular basis. Darrick: What is your oldest memory? Dustin: I'd have to say my oldest memory is winning the Colorado State Youth Wrestling tournament for the very first time. I did it twice. I remember my first year of wrestling I took third place and couldn't wait to hit the mats the next year. In the state championship bout, I remember wrestling this kid who was extremely cocky. He kept telling everyone how good he was and how he had placed second in the Tulsa Nationals, a tournament in which he had sixty-four kids in his bracket. He started the match very tough but as soon as I hip tossed him straight onto his back, he started crying and I pinned him within seconds of the opening frame. Talk about a celebration. Darrick: Tell us something about you that most people don't know. Dustin: Every single night of my life, just before falling asleep, I say the same prayer my mom and my grandma taught my brother and I when we were little. Afterwards, I share several words with God and I thank him for everything he has provided for me in my life. At the end of every single day, it reminds me just how blessed I truly am. Darrick: When you're no longer amongst the living, how would you most like to be remembered? Dustin: I want to be remembered as a very positive person. A guy that was able to get along with anyone and everyone, who put a smile on your face as big as the one you would often see on mine. A person that people could look up to and trust.
