10 Questions With Felipe Portela (by Darrick Patrick) Felipe "Balboa" Portela is a professional mixed martial artist who has competed in organizations such as Gladiator Challenge, Total Combat, Native Fighting Championship, XCage, Capital Fight, and Reality Combat Championship. At the time of this interview, his next scheduled match is against Brian Melancon at Strikeforce Challengers: Larkin vs. Zwicker on September 23rd, 2011. Darrick: What was the journey that led you to professional mixed martial arts competition? Felipe: I was born in Brasilia, Brazil. I did all kind of martial arts from the age of six until I was nine years old, including Judo, Taekwondo, Capoeira, Ninjutsu, and Kung Fu. My brothers suggested to me that I try out Jiu-Jitsu. I liked it a lot, but as a Brazilian I always wanted to be a soccer player. When I was sixteen years old, I decided to quit soccer and primarily focus on Jiu-Jitsu. I started training in kickboxing one year later, which I competed in until 2008. Then in 2008, I decided to come to San Diego, learn English, and start my MMA career. Darrick: Who are some of the people that greatly influenced you while growing up? Felipe: My family and my coaches. Darrick: Do you have any words of advice for other individuals looking to compete in MMA? Felipe: Train a lot because there is going to be plenty of competition. This sport is going to be the biggest sport in the world. Darrick: Your next scheduled fight is against Brian Melancon on September 23rd. What are your thoughts about this upcoming match? Felipe: This is going to be my Strikeforce debut, so I'm very excited to show the world all of my skills in this fight. I believe Brian and I match up well with each other. He is a very tough dude who likes to strike and so do I. I am looking foward to September 23rd. Darrick: What brings you the most fulfillment out of martial arts? Felipe: When I have my arms raised. It`s the best feeling in the world. Darrick: Who are a few of the people in the sport that you highly respect? Felipe: I respect the Gracies, Wanderlei Silva, and Anderson Silva. The Gracies created this sport. Wanderlei Silva was the guy who I first watched when it came to the fights and made me want to become a MMA fighter. Anderson Silva is the best fighter in the world. Darrick: Outside of MMA, what are your other interests? Felipe: I like to go to the beach with my girlfriend and friends to play some soccer, Smashball, and surf. I mostly try to rest though. Darrick: Tell us something about you that most people don't know. Felipe: I studied law for two years before quitting it to come to the U.S. to live my dream. Darrick: What is your oldest memory? Felipe: Watching Power Rangers with my family when I was five years old. (Laughs) Darrick: If you had three wishes, what would they be? Felipe: It would start with winning my first fight in Strikeforce, then getting the Strikeforce belt, and finally becoming the UFC Welterweight Champion. 10 Questions With Brett Oteri (by Darrick Patrick) Brett Oteri is a professional mixed martial artist who has appeared in organizations such as Reality Fighting, Combat Zone, Moosin, and Cage Fighting Xtreme. At the time of this interview, his next scheduled match is against Ryan Quinn in Bellator Fighting Championships at BFC 48 on August 20th, 2011. Darrick: How did you end up competing professionally in mixed martial arts? Brett: I began taking Karate when I was five years old and then started wrestling in middle school. While in college, I worked on boxing at Petronelli's in Brockton, Massachusetts. I was very excited to get a chance to put it all together, so I took an amateur fight a few years ago. Darrick: Who are a few of the people in the sport that you highly respect? Brett: I respect any fighter that steps into the cage to challenge himself or herself. One thing that really bugs me though is people taking fights with people that are not at their level, just to look like a good fighter by punishing a lower-level competitor. Darrick: Any words of advice for other individuals looking to compete in MMA? Brett: If you want to get started in mixed martial arts, I suggest you join a good gym with real quality instruction. Being tough is important, but skills are what will take you down the right path. Darrick: Your next scheduled match is against Ryan Quinn on August 20th. What are your thoughts about this upcoming fight? Brett: Ryan Quinn is a very good guy. He offered me this fight when another local guy backed out to take another great opportunity. He wants a challenging opponent and I respect that very much. I look forward to competing with him - and after that, training with him! Darrick: What brings you the most fulfillment out of martial arts? Brett: I enjoy the training more than anything. Some athletes complain about the hard work of training. I am the opposite. I would be okay just training all the time and gaining more skills. However, the competition allows you to know how you are progressing. Darrick: Who are some of the people that greatly influenced you while growing up? Brett: My parents in very different ways. My mother in the analytical way, teaching me to break things down and find the best route to success. My father introduced me to martial arts and gave me the passion to study them and someday teach myself. Darrick: Outside of MMA, what are your other interests? Brett: Spending time with my family is my number one focus in life. We have been blessed with a new baby girl and she is more than I could have imagined. I want to be a great husband and father. That is something I can be proud of when looking back. Darrick: What is your oldest memory? Brett: Getting stung on the eyelid by a bee in our front yard. I was two or three years old. Darrick: Tell us something about you that most people don't know. Brett: I am a former pro bodybuilder and an elite level triathlete. Like I said, I love to train! Darrick: If you were the last person alive on Earth, what do you think you'd do to entertain yourself? Brett: I would travel the world as best I could and write down all that I saw, hoping that more people would come later and have something to read. 10 Questions With Ronda Rousey (by Darrick Patrick) "Rowdy" Ronda Rousey is a professional mixed martial artist who has competed in organizations such as King of the Cage and Hard Knocks Fighting Championship. She also appeared in the 2008 Olympic Games and went on to win an Olympic medal in Judo. At the time of this interview, her next scheduled match is against Sarah D'Alelio at Strikeforce Challengers: Gurgel vs. Duarte on August 12th, 2011. Darrick: What was the road that led you to professional mixed martial arts competition? Ronda: After the 2008 Olympics, I took a year off from Judo thinking that a year of being home and being "normal" would rekindle my motivation to compete in the sport. I tried returning to Judo in late 2009, but was still pretty miserable. I then moved back to Los Angeles, considering both being a rescue swimmer for the Coast Guard or MMA as possible alternate careers. Since joining the Coast Guard was a commitment I couldn't back out of, I decided to try mixed martial arts first. Darrick: Your next scheduled fight is against Sarah D'Alelio on August 12th. What are your thoughts about this upcoming match? Ronda: I think she's a very good fighter, but I never take a fight I don't think I can win. I feel like I have better stand-up, takedowns, conditioning, transitions, and submissions than her. I'm just going to walk in and do what comes naturally. Darrick: Are there any extra struggles being a female in mixed martial arts or do you believe it to be basically the same difficulty for both genders? Ronda: I believe I'm lucky that the women's divisions are not as deep and I can rise to the pro stage faster than most men. Getting recognition and publicity though are going to be more challenging for me because I'm not a guy. Darrick: Who are a few of the people in the sport that you highly respect? Ronda: I absolutely adore Fedor. I love how he fights, how he carries himself, and even his belly! Though I couldn't ever be as soft-spoken as him, I will always try to emulate his fighting style. Darrick: What brings you the most fulfillment out of martial arts? Ronda: Winning the respect of those that I respect. Also, winning in spite of those who have wronged me along the way. Darrick: Do you have any words of advice for other individuals looking to compete in MMA? Ronda: Don't rush yourself. Make sure you take baby steps and are one hundred percent prepared in all areas. Darrick: Outside of mixed martial arts, what are your other interests? Ronda: When I'm not training, I'm usually not moving at all. I've started dabbling into stunt work though and it's been pretty fun so far. Darrick: What comic book character do you relate to most? Ronda: Vegeta from Dragonball Z. He's got a lot of pride, and is not the most popular guy. When it comes down to it though, he does whatever he can to get it done. Darrick: Tell us something about you that most people don't know. Ronda: I'm a big crier, I will literally cry over spilled milk. Darrick: What is your oldest memory? Ronda: Taking an apple out of the fridge and rolling it down a hallway. 10 Questions With Nah-shon Burrell (by Darrick Patrick) Nah-shon "The Rock-n-Rolla" Burrell is a professional mixed martial artist who has appeared in organizations such as Strikeforce, Cage Fury Fighting Championships, Asylum Fight League, Xtreme Caged Combat, and Jake the Snake Promotions. At the time of this interview, his next scheduled match is against Lukasz Les at Strikeforce Challengers: Gurgel vs. Duarte on August 12th, 2011. Darrick: What was the path that led you to competing professionally in mixed martial arts? Nah-shon: After I graduated high school, I planned to go to college for business management but my GPA was too low to go to the school I wanted. I didn't want to wait and go through the whole process of getting in, so I started searching for another path to pursue. I was sitting at home one day and caught an episode of UFC Unleashed. Ever since then I was hooked. I started looking for gyms to train in and the rest is history. Darrick: Any words of advice for other individuals looking to compete in MMA? Nah-shon: You can't get into this sport and half-ass it. Train hard for every fight. I learned that the hard way. Darrick: Who are a few of the people in the sport that you highly respect? Nah-shon: I'm a big fan of Anderson Silva. He's actually the person who got me into the sport after watching one of his fights. I like Rampage because I think our fighting styles are about ninety-five percent similar. Also, Junior dos Santos and Jose Aldo. Darrick: Your next scheduled match is against Lukasz Les on August 12th. What are your thoughts about this upcoming fight? Nah-shon: He's a solid opponent and has really good Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. I am prepared though, so I'm going to make it a good fight. Darrick: What brings you the most fulfillment out of martial arts? Nah-shon: I love the fact that it's one-on-one. If you lose, you can't blame anyone else. I don't know... (Laughs) I just love to fight. Darrick: Who is someone that greatly influenced you while growing up? Nah-shon: My mom, she's very strong and she has taught me everything. Darrick: Outside of MMA, what are your other interests? Nah-shon: Other than mixed martial arts, I really enjoy cooking. Darrick: What is your oldest memory? Nah-shon: My black, yellow, and red Big Wheel being stolen when I was younger. Darrick: Tell us something about you that most people don't know. Nah-shon: I would like to be a chef. Darrick: If you had 24 hours left to live, how would you spend that time? Nah-shon: I don't know, I'd act a fool. There'd definitely be fast driving and a lot of partying. At the time of this interview, his next scheduled match is against Matt Nice in Bellator Fighting Championships at BFC 48 on August 20th, 2011. Darrick: What was the journey that led you to professional mixed martial arts competition? Andrew: I started martial arts at the age of four in Tae Kwon Do and when I saw Royce Gracie in the first UFC, I had to learn Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. So, that's what led me here. Darrick: Who are some of the people that greatly influenced you while growing up? Andrew: My old martial arts teacher Larry Rogers and my youth boxing coach Brian Clark were two people that influenced me greatly growing up. Also, my mother because she had a very tough life and I watched her do nothing but positive things. She gave me as much as she can, even though we had nothing. Darrick: Do you have any words of advice for other individuals looking to compete in MMA? Andrew: My advice would be just to train and have fun at first. Eventually you'll get into BJJ, various grappling tournaments, and you can take it from there. Darrick: Your next scheduled fight is against Matt Nice on August 20th. What are your thoughts about this upcoming match? Andrew: I'm excited to fight for Bellator in my home state of Connecticut. I don't know much about Matt Nice. From what I do know though, he's a super tough guy and comes from a great camp. I respect his teacher greatly and expect nothing but the best from him. Darrick: What brings you the most fulfillment out of martial arts? Andrew: The most fulfillment I get from martial arts is teaching Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to my five-year-old nephew, Cole. He has been training since he was two years old and he is amazing. He is my life and to teach him my skill, and him loving it the way he does, is the best thing in life for me. Darrick: Who are a few of the people in the sport that you highly respect? Andrew: In mixed martial arts, I have a lot of respect for my coach - former number one ranked lightweight, Vitor "Shaolin" Ribeiro. Also, Jose Aldo and B.J. Penn are two others that I highly respect. Darrick: Outside of MMA, what are your other interests? Andrew: Hanging with my five brothers, my closest friend Frank Mengert, and my whole crew. Also, spoiling my nephew in every way possible. Darrick: If you had superpowers, what would they be? Andrew: If I could pick a superpower, I'd say invisibility. This way, I could go anywhere I want. Darrick: Tell us something about you that most people don't know. Andrew: I train to slow songs. Darrick: What is your oldest memory? Andrew: Being a kid, seeing my mother cry, and saying to myself that nobody will ever hurt her once I'm older. I was two years old then and now it's the truth. 10 Questions With Trisha Clark (by Darrick Patrick) Trisha Clark is a professional mixed martial artist who has appeared in organizations such as C3 Fights and Crowbar MMA. At the time of this interview, her next scheduled match is against Brenda Gonzales in King of the Cage at KOTC: Overdrive on August 20th, 2011. Darrick: How did you end up competing professionally in mixed martial arts? Trisha: I played basketball and volleyball in college. After I was finished with that, I needed something else to do. My boyfriend had just started fighting and I thought it looked like fun. So, I started training and had my first amateur fight after four months. Darrick: Any words of advice for other individuals looking to compete in MMA? Trisha: It takes a lot of time and commitment. There are a lot of sweat and tears that go into practice. As long as you work hard, you will succeed. Darrick: Who are a few of the people in the sport that you highly respect? Trisha: Every female fighter. It takes a lot to get in there, hit someone, and get hit back. Also, Jared Hess. He's currently fighting in Bellator and he never gives up in his fights. Darrick: Your next scheduled match is against Brenda Gonzales on August 20th. What are your thoughts about this upcoming fight? Trisha: I'm not sure how it will go. I hear that she is a boxer and for the last few months I have worked extra hard on that. Prepare to see a great stand-up match between us. Other than that, I don't know anything else about her. This fight will also be at 130 pounds. I normally fight at 125, which means it's not as big of a weight cut as normal. I think that will make it easier on my body when it comes to recovery. I am also especially excited about this fight being close to home. Darrick: What brings you the most fulfillment out of martial arts? Trisha: Knowing that I can protect myself, and be confident with myself. Also, just being in shape and healthy is very fulfilling. Darrick: Do you feel as if there are any extra hurdles being a female in mixed martial arts or do you believe it to be basically the same struggle for both genders? Trisha: In some ways it's a struggle for both because we are all trying to get to the top. I feel it's easier for males to get noticed and move towards the top though since there are so many promotions geared towards the male fighter. Also, there are people that don't have respect for the female fighter. When it comes to wanting to fight on a promotion, the promoters sometimes turn the other way. Hopefully that will all change because there are some amazing female fighters. Darrick: Outside of MMA, what are your other interests? Trisha: I love camping, playing video games, traveling, and playing slow pitch softball. Darrick: What is your oldest memory? Trisha: I think I was six or seven years old, but I'm not positive. I just know that I was really young. My mom put my hair up in a side ponytail and I wanted to go show my neighbor friend. I went over there and she wasn't home. It made me sad. Darrick: Tell us something about you that most people don't know. Trisha: I'm a hoarder. Also, I am deathly afraid of being in confined places. Darrick: If you had three wishes, what would they be? Trisha: I wish to live in Mexico, have my own MMA gym, and make enough money to be able to share it with my family.
