Right on. In my dojo we do Shotokan Karate, Ju-Jitsu, Kobudo Bojutsu and Kickboxing. My Sensei also teaches me a little kenjutsu on the side.

Hey, nice to see other MAF members on mymmazone.com!

Thanks Akai.  I'm sure we will have plenty to talk about here.  MMA is here to stay.

Tom

The concept of MMA intrigues me, as it is basically martial artists who practice multiple and/or martial arts made up of other martial arts. Thing is, when I watch UFC, I don't see much difference from street fighting. My dojo is MMA; we practice four martial arts (I practice five) simultaneously and what you see there is a lot different from UFC fights in general.

Akai,

My basic art is a mixture of arts called Vee-jitsu.  It was developed over 50 yrs. ago by Professor Florendo Visitation.  He mixed many martial arts into one.  His philosophy was that  - to have a rose garden is a beautiful thing.  But when you add tulips, gardenias, violets, azaleas, orchids and many more different flowers you can have an even more beautiful garden.  I have studied Shotokan & TKD as well as the judo, ju-jitsu & Arnis we do.  We also do full-contact stick fighting (Arnis).  I noticed that when we do full-contact stick fighting it looks more like MMA than when we start stand-up and grapple.  I don't know why but we wear face shields when we do stick fighting (be crazy not to) but once somebody loses thier weapon it immediatly becomes more like MMA.  Then we can do forearms and knees to the face and not worry about breaking the guys nose.  We are not pros.  Most of the guys have day jobs.  We can't go walking around with a broken jaw.  I think this is a major reason for other methods of sparring being different than MMA which was also called NHB (no holds barred). IMHO.
Thanks,
Tom

Vee-jitsu sounds fantastic. Great stuff; do you know of any specific martial arts that were absorbed into Vee-jitsu?

Vee-Jitsu comes straight out of Brooklyn so there is a lot of self-defense.  We do karate, judo, ju-jitsu, Arnis, TKD, boxing and kick-boxing.  Its loads of fun.  If you Google Vee-Jitsu you will get some history.

Thanks,
Tom
